Urbanised Landscape: Re-thinking regional identities in the Free State of Thuringia

(Abstract, ENG)

Traditional old town centres alongside new residential developments, farmland, conservation areas, sand and gravel pits, industrial zones, distribution hubs, large-scale greenhouses, and energy infrastructures: Thuringia’s mosaic of diverse territorial entities forms a distinctive urbanised landscape, merging local characteristics and histories with global interconnections.

The research seminar explored Thuringia’s urbanised landscape through the lens of pressing transition themes: energy, mobility, agriculture and forestry, housing, and Baukultur. The results revealed the political economy and its extensive spatial, social, ecological, and infrastructural entanglements across scales. These insights provided a foundation for joint discussions on future transition challenges and opportunities, with the goal of reimagining Thuringia’s regional identities in the context of a circular and sustainable future. The seminar was held in cooperation with: International Building Exhibition (IBA) Thüringen
